Plot Summary

Leonie is a film about the true life story of Leonie Gilmour (Emily Mortimer) and her son, Isamu Noguchi, whose lives crossed continents, wars and cultures, embodied with courage and passion in search of art and freedom. As an independent young woman seeking to overcome the restrictive female roles in turn-of-the century America, Leonie is retained by the famous Japanese poet, Yone Noguchi, as his editor. Their relationship evolves romantically, however Yone abruptly leaves when she shares with him that she is pregnant. Following him to Japan, she is cast alone to raise her son in a society with few opportunities for women. A tender and inspiring story of a remarkable woman who nurtures the amazing artistic talent of her son who has only one way to succeed and one person to guide him, as he grows into the world renown artist, Isamu Noguchi.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Leonie Gilmour was almost certainly unusual and unusually self-reliant. Too bad that the film that bears her name ultimately reduces her to the mother of her child. – Rachel Saltz, New York Times, Mar 21, 2013

Rotten: Failing to carve anything graceful or fluid out of a slab of biography, helmer Hisako Matsui does bring to light a curious and intriguing story of a great-woman-behind-a-great-man in Leonie. – John Anderson, Variety, Mar 25, 2013

Fresh: Lushly photographed and featuring a stellar performance by the luminous Emily Mortimer in the title role, Hisako Matsui's film is deeply heartfelt but only intermittently compelling. – Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter, Mar 22, 2013

Fresh: Color it inspirational. – Rex Reed, New York Observer, Mar 20, 2013
