Plot Summary

Nominated for 4 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima tells the untold story of the Japanese soldiers who defended their homeland against invading American forces during World War II. With little defense other than sheer will and the volcanic rock of Iwo Jima itself, the unprecedented tactics of General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (Ken Watanabe, The Last Samurai) and his men transform what was predicted to be a swift defeat into nearly 40 days of heroic and resourceful combat. Their sacrifices, struggles, courage and compassion live on in the taut, gripping film Rolling Stone calls "unique and unforgettable." It is the powerful companion piece to Flags of Our Fathers.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Indirectly but cogently comment on our experiences of other movies. Having Japanese soldiers as heroes allows us to reconsider the didacticism we've been handed in the past. – Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader, Oct 18, 2008

Fresh: Where Flags heaved its characters through war and psychic trauma without first allowing us all to get acquainted, Letters takes such care with its protagonists that they awaken and descend from the screen. – Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Eastwood is now 76, and Letters has the feel of a movie made by a man of experience. Almost stately in its tone, Letters reflects the wisdom of living; it's interested in observing how men behave when they know they can't win. – Robert Denerstein, Denver Rocky Mountain News, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Letters is a work of whetted craft and judgment, tempered by Eastwood's years of life, moviemaking and the potent tango of the two. It is the work of a mature filmmaker willing to entertain the true power of the cinema. – Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post, Jun 24, 2010

Great movie...

...but where the hell is the 'powerful companinion piece' 'Flags of our Fathers'?

One of the best movies yet!

I'm sick and tired of seeing movies of WWII on the American point of view...though some our good....Letters from Iwo Jima shows the Japanese side of story about the battle of Iwo Jima. I loved, I just loved

Best war movie ever

I like a lot of war movies, but this one, while not in english, I could follow all the characters and did not get lost. While America considers it the good guys, war has a lot of grey areas and is not black and white or good and evil. This was really good portrayal of the Japanesse side of the war. Execellent!!!
