Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Does something that few painful dramas accomplish: It tells a tale of resilience without platitudes about the triumph of the human spirit or without false promises about an unclouded future. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Jul 14, 2011

Fresh: Manyaka gives the character a gaze so true it could only open hearts and minds. – Sheri Linden, Los Angeles Times, Jul 22, 2011

Fresh: Nicely splits the difference between ethnographic realism and melodramatic uplift. – Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com, Jul 17, 2011

Rotten: The script groans beneath a mass of symbolic winking and declamatory exposition that has the unfortunate effect of turning the villagers into credulous simpletons, ready to blow with any wind that carries them. – Ella Taylor, NPR, Jul 15, 2011

Outstanding

One of the best films of 2011; deftly explores the failure to address the HIV epidemic, but more importantly shows the impact on a personal level. Beautifully shot and well acted.

So real that you forget it’s a movie.

This movie is the most reality you will need for a lifetime. When I saw it, I kept telling everyone about how great it was. It had me balling crying at many scenes and kept replaying in my mind the next few days. This is a movie for anyone. No disappointments here.
