Plot Summary
Life of a King is the true story of one man’s inspiring mission to better the future of inner-city youth in Washington, D.C. After being incarcerated for 18 years, Eugene Brown (Academy Award®-winner Cuba Gooding, Jr.) established the Big Chair Chess Club to help pull kids off the streets. Using the simple chess-inspired motto “think before you move,” Brown helped give troubled students something that he never had: a future.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: The furious energy with which Mr. Gooding stifles his own intensity becomes a fascinating subtext in what is otherwise a forgettable film.
Rotten: Even if the story is faithful to the way the events played out in real life - and the official description is that the picture is a "dramatic retelling" - Life of a King couldn't feel more formulaic.
Fresh: An effective, even heartwarming, tale of one man's commitment to teaching that playing by the rules is more important than winning.
Rotten: Solid performances-especially from star Cuba Gooding Jr.-elevate the film slightly above the familiar trappings of its genre.
