Plot Summary
When a ship of Americans and Britons is sunk by a missile from a German U-boat during WWII, the survivors must cope with the elements - and each other. Unfortunately, they know nothing about navigation or survival at sea, and quickly begin to turn on each other. So when they pull the Nazi U-boat Captain out of the sea they have no choice but to trust his superior survival skills, even though the course he is steering is back to his boat, and he is taking them as prisoners of war.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: That old master of screen melodrama, Alfred Hitchcock, and Writer John Steinbeck have combined their distinctive talents in a tremendously provocative film.
Fresh: The characters are reasonably free of cliched personalities, so what happens between them is rarely predictable, and there are enough crises and tensions within the 96-minute running time to hold a viewer fully attentive.
Fresh: Hitchcock's shifting sympathies guarantee our guilty involvement with the characters until he builds to a climax of intellectual and spiritual excitation.

Hitchcock's Most Underrated Work
Lifeboat is easily Hitchcock's most underrated work. While not being a thriller, this character-driven war time drama is a masterpiece of symbolism and one of my favorite movies. Tallulah Bankhead especially turns in a magnificent performance as a wealthy reporter too wrapped up in her own world to care for anyone else- and therefore truly unable to understand the true horror and senseless brutality of WWII. Highly recommended for all Hitchcock buffs and classic film fans.
incredible
this is a truely timeless movie that will always be a classic.=)
Plenty of Life in Lifeboat
Hailed as Tallulah Bankhead's fines screen performance, Lifeboat, nominated for three Oscars, has gone some 65 years as one of Hitchcock's most underrated work. A must see.
