Plot Summary

In the aftermath of a great battle between rival kingdoms, only two men remain standing. One is a peasant soldier with a shameless ability for avoiding his responsibilities in battle (Jackie Chan); the other is a warrior prince, who has been wounded fighting for his country (Wang Leehom). Irresistibly tempted by the chance to collect a large reward, the peasant overpowers the disadvantaged prince and sets off to collect his bounty. Unknowingly, his bold actions unleash a chain reaction of chaos, and they are soon pursued across country by relentless nomad warriors and rogue forces lead by the prince's disenchanted brother. When danger confronts them around every corner, the world's two most unlikely allies quickly realise they will need to join forces if they are to make it home in one piece! Now, as each challenge takes them closer to victory, a prince will learn humility and a nobody will find the strength to be someone great. Based on an original story created by Jackie Chan.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: There is epic action and adventure in this film, to be sure, and some humour too - but it is all directed towards a conclusion whose devastating impact is not even undone by the touches of mawkishness that get us there. – Anton Bitel, Little White Lies, Nov 2, 2010

Rotten: Jackie Chan has made plenty of cracking films in his native tongue, but Little Big Soldier, a rambunctiously tragicomic martial epic set during China's Warring States period, is regrettably not one of them. – Tim Robey, Daily Telegraph, Sep 30, 2010

Fresh: Genre-benders who like their Leone-esque historical slapstick buddy-action epics with a side order of political tragedy will find much to enjoy here. – Tom Huddleston, Time Out, Sep 29, 2010

Wonderful

Jackie Chan really makes his dramatic breakthrough with this film. I've seen him in some pretty corny action/comedies with a loose plot at best, but he really broke out of that mold in this film. Surprised and Amazed to truly see the range of his acting skills(and singing skills too) show themselves so capable here. The cinematography was beautiful as well set against such incredible scenery. I've enjoyed Jackie for his innocent nature in the his other movies, but for his wisdom and maturity in this setting. Great film.

Wonderful

The movie is Wonderful! Jackie really did it this time. But were is his song? I need to get that song!

Wonderful...but... (SPOILER)

...there is that classic Chinese ending. If you know the genre, you know the drill. So irritating. WHY do they do that? It's kind of sick in the head and heart. Get to know interesting characters, care about their fate, then watch them...well, you'll see.

Ignore the last five minutes and you have a fun, clever, enjoyable film with interesting characters and good action.
