Plot Summary
While an independence that borders on alienation may be the enforced way of life for all 21st century Americans, there is a persistent subculture for whom it is a daily goal. Long Gone, a feature-length documentary film, follows this floating population over five years through the lives of six tramps who have chosen the rails over mainstream society. They are drifters, hobos, tramps and they define themselves as “the last free Americans.” Traveling through America’s heartland, Long Gone captures this microcosm with startlingly beautiful photography, seamless storytelling, and original music by Tom Waits. Long Gone allows the tramps to tell their own stories, capturing on film the larger tale of this subculture as it unfolds. Theirs is an anachronistic world of apparent anarchy and hard-won survival. New York Slim is our articulate narrator, the unifying hub between the characters, well-loved and respected by young and old riders alike. From a world-weary Vietnam vet to the wide-eyed, middle-class, adolescent girl, Long Gone enters the private lives of its subjects to witness birth, death, addiction, violence and redemption.

Just what it should be
Gritty. Honest. Stubborn. Unconditional love and camaraderie. This film is everything you'd expect from a documentary about trainhopping, homelessness, wanderlust, and life in the margins. The story follows several different groups of tramps across the country, and documents the hardship and companionship of life on the rails. Original Score by Tom Waits? How could you refuse? To clear one thing up, the filmmakers did a great job in that there is no overbearing ideal or romantic presumptions forced into the story or characters, yet the filmmakers seem to be "amongst" the tramps, hopping trains and sharing meals around the fire. This is what a documentary ought to be.
Dogman
I know Dogman and these days he isn't doing so well. Please give your prayers to him!!! Sept 2011 - (Dogman Tony) John B. Is getting better and he is giving back to his Brothers and focused on trying to get well and getting back on the road to see his daughter and grand kid. He is such a remarkable person that shares his wisdom and battles to people that still haven't learned how hard life can tear you down when you continually abuse alcohol and your body.
Finally!
I've been looking for this movie since I caught it at Slamdance in 2003. A beautiful, haunting portrait of a misunderstood American subculture. So glad this is finally available! Especially if you love Tom Waits, you should check this one out.
