Plot Summary

After being abandoned by their Nazi parents at the end of World War II, five German siblings embark on a harrowing journey across their war-torn country. Led by the eldest, 14 year-old Lore, the children are forced to confront their parents' actions and the reality of the new world in which they find themselves. When the group encounters the mysterious Thomas, a Jewish refugee, Lore finds herself torn by conflicting emotions - her innate contempt for his kind and her burgeoning sexual desire. Lyrical, haunting, and unforgettable, Lore is a strikingly unique coming-of-age tale and an unforgettable look at the human legacy of the holocaust.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: This striking, slow-building drama ... uses fractured, impressionistic imagery as a mirror of moral dislocation as the children make their way through an unfamiliar landscape. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Feb 13, 2013

Fresh: Lore, from Australian director Cate Shortland, proceeds like a long-ago fairy tale, dark-hued, grounded in real-life 20th-century horrors. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Jan 1, 2014

Fresh: Full of surprises, the movie draws a thin line between pity and revulsion - how would you feel if you had discovered your whole life had been based on lies? – Leba Hertz, San Francisco Chronicle, Feb 28, 2013

Fresh: A fiercely poetic portrait of a young woman staggering beyond innocence and denial, it's about the wars that rage within after the wars outside are lost. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Mar 7, 2013

OUTSTANDING

I watched this movie twice because It was that good! A young child's mind is formed and fashioned by parent's, and when parent's are deceived this deception trickles down to the young impressional minds that are looking up to them. I do love this based on a true story of a 14 year old girl, who in real life was really 12 at the time and her courage to survive.

Terrific film!

A hauntingly beautiful film whose actors were incredible.

Impressionable

Very good...really enjoyed it. Subtitles were easy and filmography was at times stunning, abstract, and beautiful. As some have said, it gives a unique story about the fall of Germany, and how it affected a real life family of that time. The realization of the horrible Jewish genocide that was occuring at that time was unknown to most Germans and when it was exposed, many could not accept it. The hardship of those left behind to survive is also portrayed.
