Plot Summary
In 1935, Greta Garbo starred in one of her finest and best-loved talkies, Anna Karenina. In 1927, she starred in this loosely adapted silent version of Leo Tolstoy's novel, a film that today provides an intriguing opportunity for a before-and-after comparison of the actress in the same role and remains an intriguing film in its own right. Love captures Garbo near the start of her career - a mere 22 and already celebrated as both a gifted artist and screen goddess. She plays Anna, wife of a Russian nobleman, who surrenders her virtue, her security and her child for the love of a gallant and impetuous officer (John Gilbert, Garbo's off-screen amour). The film's original ads say everything a Garbo devotee needs to hear: "Garbo and Gilbert in Love."
Customer Reviews
a bit of a let down
while although i did enjoy the plot and the movie, i was highly upset to find that the musical score was played before a live audience. I slightly enjoyed the prospect of feeling like i was in a theater, but hated the occasional cough and sneeze and the overpowering laughing. This irritated me the same way as an eyelash being caught in your eye. However, I still highly recomend this to any Garbo fan.
Terrible soundtrack
"Love" is a beautiful silent film starring Great Garbo in an updated version of Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina". The film is beautifully transferred and also includes an alternate ending made for Europe. However, before buying you should know that the soundtrack on this video almost ruins the movie. The musical score for this WB release of the film was recorded live at an actual screening. Nothing wring with that, except that the audience at that showing was very loud - laughing and clapping in inappropriate places, having a good time at the film's expense. How did WB ever think this would make an acceptable soundtrack? I was only able to watch the film by turning off the sound and playing some other music to accompany the film.
5 stars for the film, -4 for the soundtrack.
