Plot Summary

Based on Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel and adapted by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Ronald Harwood (The Pianist), Love In the Time of Cholera is one of the world’s most romantic stories. The drama traces the job-like vigil of Florentino Ariza (Javier Bardem), who waits for more than half a century to claim the hand of Fermina Daza (Giovanna Mezzogiorno), the woman he loves.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Often watchable (and listenable) without ever being good. – Wesley Morris, Boston Globe, Nov 24, 2011

Rotten: There's a little cholera in the middle and some love at the beginning and end, but Love in the Time of Cholera is mostly about romantic obsession and never-ending frustration -- the latter of which may jibe with the audience's reaction. – Jack Mathews, New York Daily News, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: If you've seen Gone With the Wind, you've seen what Love in the Time of Cholera isn't. – Kyle Smith, New York Post, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: This romantic drama by director Mike Newell preserves the odd playfulness of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's international best seller but sacrifices its eroticism and intricate nonlinear plotting. – Andrea Gronvall, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Customer Reviews

This might be the worst movie ever made.

From the nonsensical montage posing as a plot that was somehow torn from the novel, to the comically amateurish old-person make-up, the wall-to-wall bad sentimental music, the babel of mismatched accents, the b-movie-style exoticizing of South American culture — this movie is one of the biggest wastes of time, money and material I have had the misfortune of paying for. A documentary on cholera would have been more romantic.

A lifetime of yearning

In a time when doing the right thing was the only thing for a young girl to do or lest she be labeled and scorned by society. When even true love was ignored if you were not of the same social class. This movie is a glimpse into the past that allows us to witness the biding spirit of two hearts torn apart and there lives to be lived side by side year after year until fate can bring them together once more. For someone looking for special effects and smoke and mirrors this movie is not for you. If it is romance and a look into the past that you seek you can find it here. Love in the Time of Cholera is what it claims to be a drama.

Great movie for those who understand it ;)

I wanted to watch this movie because of the author of the book. Half way through I was a little disappointed but in the end I was very much in love with this movie.....I had to see it again, So I did! The soundtrack is GREAT; (bias opinion because I am a Shakira fanatic) Watch it!!!!! ....with an open mind and heart :)
