Dont believe...
...that plot summary, which makes you think this is some sort of touchy-feely "get in touch with your sexual identity" movie. It's much more interesting than that (thank God).
Paul and Gunther--best friends at college, but from very different socioeconomic backgrounds--make a suicide pact. You hear about that from almost the first line, so it's not like I'm revealing any big spoiler there. In fact, when the movie starts, Gunther is dead and Paul is being questioned by the authorities. The suspense, really, is in finding out how it happened, and why.
Paul is straight, writes (pretty bad) poetry, and has a crush on Gunther's sister Hilde. Wealthy Gunther is gay, and has a crush on Hilde's bisexual boyfriend. These four, along with Hilde's permanently de-trop friend Elli, spend an alcohol-soaked and sexually-charged weekend at a summer house, pretending to have a grand time but actually making each other miserable--and every moment it seems more and more likely that someone is going to use the gun they keep waving around.
It has the makings of a great tragedy. As a film it's a near-miss, since there are slow bits here and there. in But the movie is mostly successful at building tension out of these simple ingredients.
Even the title is misleading. In German it's "Was nuetzt Liebe in Gedanken," literally "What use is love in thoughts?" or more liberally, "It's no good just thinking about love." Obviously that's a bear of a title in English, but it's at least not so deceptive.
Love in Thoughts
Fantastic movie, great, young german actors and a fantastic story.
You will not find a movie like this very often on itunes !!!
It shows us very impressive, that during 1920 up to 1930 everything was possible in Germany and Berlin was the world center of lifestyle and gay life.
