Plot Summary

With the approach of Christmas causing him to feel lonely in life and love, Robert Malone (Academy Award winner Martin Landau) braves the wintery snow to arrive home from his job at the grocery store only to find a stranger (Academy Award winner Ellen Burstyn) standing in his home. What begins as an odd and awkward encounter quickly blossoms into what appears to be a romantic late life love affair that takes us on a heartfelt and wonderful journey which takes an unexpected turn. Skillfully and sensitively directed by Nik Fackler, the film also stars Elizabeth Banks and Adam Scott, and features original music by Conor Oberst and a score by Nate Walcott and Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Will hit home with anyone who has had to struggle with the most difficult aspects of aging. – Neil Genzlinger, New York Times, Sep 10, 2010

Fresh: Call Lovely, Still life-affirming if you must, but its uplift is designed less to reassure than to honor the difficult process of how we deal when faced with the loss of those we have loved. – Ella Taylor, Village Voice, Sep 7, 2010

Rotten: Fackler's patronizing debut reduces a lifetime of experience into a collection of senior citizen stereotypes. – Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News, Sep 10, 2010

Fresh: Mr. Landau invests each move with sincerity and directness, and with her flawless skin and ageless smile, Ms. Burstyn still has the candlelit sweetness of spun sugar. Even in a disappointing film, watching her is indeed lovely, still. – Rex Reed, New York Observer, Sep 8, 2010

lovely,still

How rare to see a love story between two "older" people... and one so poignantly told, beautifully acted and devoid of "schmalz" or pretention. I am a "younger" audience deeply appreciative of and in need of more role models depicting mature love. in a society ever fascinated with tech and speed and youth, this film is a gentle and genuine reminder that tender human contact still exists.

Touching

I thought it was a warm yet heartrending movie. I smiled and cried and I would recommend it to anyone of any age.
