Plot Summary

More interested in partying and flirting with young musicians than work, veteran rock journalist Ellie Klug (Toni Collette) has one last chance to prove her value to her magazine's editor: a no-stone-unturned search to discover what really happened to long lost rock god Matthew Smith, who also happens to be her ex-boyfriend. Teaming up with an eccentric amateur documentary filmmaker (Thomas Haden Church in a delightful performance), Ellie hits the road in search of answers.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: While Ms. Collette grounds Ellie and her emotions in a tough-minded plausibility, she can only hint at what the script fails to deliver: the complexities of a flawed woman's midlife crisis. – Rachel Saltz, New York Times, May 29, 2014

Fresh: For all its comic and sexual energy, Lucky Them is elevated most by its touching gravity. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, May 29, 2014

Fresh: [A] terrifically acted dramedy directed by rising talent Megan Griffiths. – Justin Chang, Variety, Sep 12, 2013

Fresh: Director Megan Griffiths and writers Huck Botko and Emily Wachtel flesh out a female perspective that's refreshing and engrossing without demonizing or objectifying men. – Martin Tsai, Los Angeles Times, Jun 5, 2014

Run don't walk

LUCKY THEM is alot of fun. We have all lived Ellie's life in some way, shape or form. Toni Collette and Thomas Haden Church are astonishing! This is a movie that stays with you for a long long time.

My favorite!

I wish I could shout it from the roof tops! You will be doing yourself a favor in seeing it. It stays with you in the best way long after the film is over. Pure magic.

No effort.

Schmaltz. This is schmaltz. Collette’s worst acting - very amateurish. Starts out with some depth but very quickly becomes shallow/ predictable and ordinary/trite. Disappointing. Simply put - this is not a smart film or an artistic film. It is generic, flimsy formulaic fluff disguised as “indie”. Too bad, even though I needed to kill an hour and wasn’t looking for a masterpiece, I would rather not have seen these characters that I usually respect play such low-rent roles in such a flimsy film. I will now have to try to forget having seen her bow down to this before I’ll watch Collette in another film. Or maybe she really can’t act and this is the first director who was unable to disguise her poor acting skills.
