Plot Summary
Madrid, 1987 ...is a two-character story with a verbose discourse on writing, journalism, careerism, aging and politics. Shot mostly within a very constricted space, the story follows an older, celebrated journalist Miguel (José Sacristán) who meets the beautiful and coy journalism-student Angela (María Valverde) to give an interview - but becomes intent upon seducing her. They end up spending time in the most unusual manner ...discussing literature, prose and career trajectories ...gradually divulging little insights into their own selves as we start to understand the old journalist's cynicism and the young protégé's intentions.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: A perceptive, ultra-wordy stab at catching the zeitgeist at a time of change in Spain, David Trueba's two-hander nonetheless feels like a working-out of social and personal themes that hasn't quite achieved the full leap from page to film.
Fresh: The actors give their characters a resonance beyond the symbolic, but the action doesn't quite transcend the stagy setup.
Fresh: A stillborn May-November seduction makes for sexual tension and fascinating dialogue.
Fresh: Madrid, 1987 operates on a dizzying number of levels - as a romantic comedy, a sex farce, a study of culture clash, ageism and idealism.

Love Films? You'll love this one.
4.75 stars. Three perfect performances—the actor, the actress and the director. What makes this so good is the script, the literary dialogue, and the droll, ironic philosophy of life. There is the sharp counterpoint of the young sexually desirable woman pursued by the old pursuer of life and user of beautiful young women.
This is an amazing idea, two persons trapped in a small space, dueling with their expectations, yet, confronted by fate to grab hold of life, not to regret or despair.
So rich a script, two actors naked, two characters with bare bodies we soon look past. This is a challenging film with only two characters to plumb.
I'm thinking of buying it, because I know I'll want to experience it, listen to it, study it many more times.
