Plot Summary

This riveting documentary chronicles the life and adventures of 14-year-old Laura Dekker, who set out on a two-year voyage in pursuit of her dream to be the youngest person ever to sail around the world alone. In the wake of a year-long battle with Dutch authorities that sparked a global storm of media scrutiny, Laura found herself far from land and family, with unwanted attention, exploring the world in search of freedom, adventure, and distant dreams of her early youth at sea. “Maidentrip” amplifies Laura’s brave, defiant voice through a mix of Laura's own video and recordings at sea and intimate vérité footage from locations including the Galapagos Islands, French Polynesia, Australia, and South Africa.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Before our eyes, Laura's lengthening limbs and deepening introspection become the point of a movie that begins with a child and ends with a young woman. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Jan 16, 2014

Rotten: Maidentrip is full of sunsets and dolphins but short on introspection and drama. – Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly, Jan 22, 2014

Fresh: "Maidenstrip" is a clear-eyed chronicle of Dekker's record-breaking voyage. Think "All Is Lost," but real, and with a teenage girl instead of Robert Redford (plus a very different ending). – Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News, Jan 16, 2014

Fresh: What the film lacks in plot twists it makes up for in sheer amazement, such as one scene in which Dekker, in green night-vision, sways to Kool & the Gang's "Celebration" while closing in on the equator in her 40-foot vessel, Guppy. – Sara Stewart, New York Post, Jan 16, 2014

True Story Telling

I read a review by "Wolfshire" dated Mar 4th 2014 I dont usually comment on anothers review but in this case I must. What exactly determines when someone is too young to do something amazing? Isnt that why we put our kids in school? to learn, grow, assess and analyze? to be there own individual selves? to think and solve problems?
What accounts for "foolishly endagering themselves? While most kids are getting drunk or taking drugs, Laura Dekker, is taking on a better role of what should be. What abandoment do you speak of? She had this dream for a very long time...her decision! She is living the life she was born to do and you want to stop her....more like control her as so much society has done and damaged.

This is the most horrid film to you? perhaps you need to come out of that box with no windows and live life.

An incredible accomplishment.

We live in a time when we do not let young people make decisions for them selves. We live in a time where there is no right of passage for todays youth. This young girl wanted to do something amazing ,she made a plan and accomplished her goal. It was dangerous but also spectacular. She is truely a one of a kind person , who will certainly lead a big life.

Well done Laura!

Nevertheless, as a career Naval Architect for the past 35 years, I’ve designed ships and offshore structures, and am not naïve about the power of the ocean: it frightens me. For instance, the waters off the South east coast of Africa are known for episodic waves which can occur suddenly and unexpectedly: these are local seas, and swells from storms in the southern ocean, the troughs of which combine for a moment to create great ‘holes’ in the sea’s surface. Even super tankers can be broken by these waves. Laura sailed south of this region, and, in general, showed great skill in making it safely around they world.

Her boat was marginally qualified, but outfitted also with great skill by Laura and her Father, both accomplished sailors. The electronic chart system was important to her successful navigation, and transit of treacherous straights, and I hope she took advantage of weather and wave height forecasting to simply avoid the worst seas.

Altogether, I can’t fault her parents as the risks were well managed and there is no certainty that Laura’s life was at greater risk than it would have been as a normal teenager growing up at home.
Well done Laura!
