Plot Summary

From Lukas Moodysson, director of the acclaimed TOGETHER, LILYA 4-EVER and SHOW ME LOVE comes MAMMOTH. The film revolves around successful New York couple Leo (Gael García Bernal) and Ellen (Michelle Williams). Leo is the creator of a booming website, and has stumbled into a world of money and big decisions. Ellen is a dedicated emergency surgeon who devotes her long shifts to saving lives. Their 8-year old daughter Jackie (Sophie Nyweide) spends most of her time with her Filipino nanny Gloria (Marife Necesito), a situation that is making Ellen start to question her priorities. When Leo travels to Thailand on business, he unwittingly sets off a chain of events that will have dramatic consequences for everyone. “Too many films exploit the perils faced by children when the social contract is ruptured, but Mammoth earns its cruel, sensationalistic turns and then some.” – Edelstein, NY MAGAZINE. From IFC Films.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: In Mammoth, when a rich child eats her lunch in New York, a poor boy in the Philippines cries. And so it goes, as privilege begets exploitation with grimly deterministic logic and pages and pages of bad dialogue. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: The movie is at once intimate and (in its softhearted way) preachy. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Nov 10, 2010

Rotten: The overlapping stories, the emotional disconnect, the heavy-handed symbolism -- no, it's not a movie from the makers of Babel, its a mumbling, stammering copycat drama from Swedish director Lukas Moodysson. – Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Mammoth manages to be as affecting as it is heartfelt. – Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal, Jun 24, 2010

Recommend it!

loved it

I loved this movie, watched it on a whim (free on demand). maybe it was the lack of expectations but this movie for one reason or another captivated me and made me think about the world. Leo kinda broke my heart though

Pretty good throughout but the Ending as it relates to the premice!?

Gael Garcia's character supposely sets off events that have dramatic consequences for everyone? Not really but still a pretty good film.
