Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Once its machinery is humming, it settles into a soothing fable of a last hurrah. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Touching if by-the-numbers. – Robert Koehler, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Writer-director Michael Schroeder compulsively references canonical films and books, presumably in the hope that genius rubs off. – Nick Pinkerton, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: For its first 45 minutes or so, and intermittently thereafter, Michael Schroeder's Man in the Chair feels, annoyingly, like a film school project. – David Wiegand, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010

Man In the Chair

Really good, nearly impossible to find lil indie flick. Honestly, you can probably figure out how the film ends in about 10 mins, but it's still worth watching because of Christopher Plummer's excellent portrayal of Flash, as well as how honest and heartfelt the rest of the film is. The film is at least worth a rent, though it's a film worth watching at least 2 or 3 times.

YES!

this movie rocked! you cant get it anywhere else.

Forced Perspective

While the acting was excellent, I felt this film was weak in story. A cliche setup only bothers me when it offers nothing new, which this film doesn't. I only cared about the main characters because of their actor's acting history. If they had been unknowns, I would not have watched the film to the end. Because I didn't feel emotionaly invested in them from the beginning-- I was looking for some redeeming quality in each, but found none, until the end. I don't like watching other people's train-wreck of a life unless it has something to say. something to offer, that exposes a Truth unseen and beautiful below the surface waiting to spring forth. And then when it is exposed, to let it shine for a while before the lights dim.
