Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Keanu Reeves's down-and-dirty and generally diverting directing debut. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Oct 31, 2013

Fresh: The brutally efficient shooting style Reeves employs to film master choreographer Yuen Woo Ping's breathtaking fights is refreshingly grounded and old-school kinetic. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Nov 4, 2013

Rotten: This hackneyed misfit resuscitates every cliche of the grade-B '80s Hong Kong martial arts programmer, even the plot parts that were already imitating bad American TV. – Michael Atkinson, Village Voice, Oct 29, 2013

Fresh: Reeves has clearly seen many Hong Kong films, and with the help of two veterans, Hollywood cinematographer Elliot Davis and HK editor Derek Hui, he's replicated one. – Mark Jenkins, NPR, Nov 1, 2013

FINISH HIM!

Keanu Reeves a brilliant director, who would have thought. The guy knows his martial arts films and his action and has made an absurdly cool movie. It's fun, it's fast, and it has the best fight scenes I've seen in a long, long time. Any self respecting fan of the genre has to watch this film. YOU OWE ME A LIFE!

YOU OWE ME A LIFE!

The best line in the whole movie, and probably the best piece of dialogue I've heard in any movie.

He likes it….

I was pleased to see this be available here as it was only in Asia for the longest time. I thought the choreography and story line "Twist" made this a good movie. Keanu did an awesome job directing and acting as the villain. I'm not sure why someone would say it was awful when it's clear they don't understand the benefits of this movie. This isn't just a standard fight and kill movie. When you realize the point of it all you'll be pleased to see that throughout the movie that idea has been in effect the entire time. Very pleased with this film and and direction.
