Plot Summary
Red Dragon, the Thomas Harris novel that introduced serial killer Hannibal Lecter to the world, was adapted for the screen by Michael Mann as Manhunter. Ace criminal profiler Will Graham (William Petersen) is very good at his job because he has the ability to make himself think like the killers he tracks. Will has been in retirement since catching Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter (Brian Cox), as being inside that particular deranged mind caused Will to have a breakdown. Will's boss Jack Crawford (Dennis Farina visits Will at his home, showing him pictures from a murder scene and asking for his help in catching a new killer they have dubbed "the Tooth Fairy" (Tom Noonan). In order to test his mental strength, Will visits Hannibal in his prison cell. Adding to the already substantial mental stress Will experiences when he returns to the job are nosy tabloid reporter Freddy Lounds (Stephen Lang), as well as Hannibal's attempts at seeking revenge through the Tooth Fairy.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The movie drives along with such intensity for much of the time that you can just let it work on your senses without worrying about whether it makes sense.
Fresh: An unpleasantly gripping thriller that rubs one's nose in a sick criminal mentality for two hours.
Fresh: I'm intrigued by that stylistic envelope: simultaneously hypnotic and enervating, meditative and empty.
Fresh: Manhunter ushered in the age of empathy for the devil.

Masterpiece Classic
Great plot with twist and turns. Reminds me of The Hannible. Watch it you will not be disappointed
Crazy good
William Petterson, from before CSI, is excellent as Will Graham and Tom Noonan provides one killer performance in this high octane crime drama.
Better Than I Remembered
Not a bad film. It pales by comparison with the remake "Red Dragon" -but honestly, it's practically the same film. The only differences are in the finale -which has little or nothing to do with either the book or the remake (which is more faithful to the book)- and the way this film interprets the killer. Of course, even with the talents of Tom Noonan as the killer, Ralph Fiennes is simply a better actor and the character is way more fleshed out. My verdict? If you want the most faithful version of "Red Dragon" and prefer Hopkins as Lecter, go with the remake. But this version is almost as great and gives you Brian Cox's somewhat more stern and youthful take on the role that Hopkins made iconic. Not a waste of time or money. Just avoid "Hannibal Rising" for the love of God!!!
