Plot Summary
Three years after leaving the police force, Will Graham is begged by an old colleague to return, to help track down a murderer who operates on the full moon and has murdered two entire families. Endowed with a sixth sense, Graham has never used conventional ways to find psychopaths. Instead, he has developed a method which is dangerous for his own mental health for it allows him to be accepted by people with deranged minds and enables him to construct a path that will lead to the murderer.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The movie drives along with such intensity for much of the time that you can just let it work on your senses without worrying about whether it makes sense.
Fresh: An unpleasantly gripping thriller that rubs one's nose in a sick criminal mentality for two hours.
Fresh: I'm intrigued by that stylistic envelope: simultaneously hypnotic and enervating, meditative and empty.
Fresh: Manhunter ushered in the age of empathy for the devil.

Awesome 80's thriller!
This movie was made at the height of Michael Mann's "Miami Vice" popularity.
The visuals, the clothes, the style all shout out mid 80's!
The movie was based on the book, "Red Dragon" long before anyone had ever heard of "The Silence of the Lambs" or Dr. Hannibal Lektor.
The reason the movie "Red Dragon" seems to use lines verbatim from this film was because it too was based on the book!
However, because no one had seen or heard of the characters unless they actually read the book, many scenes and some story lines from the book were never shot for this film.
They were kept in the updated remake "Red Dragon".
Also, the title was changed to "Manhunter" because the producers thought no one would understand the title "Red Dragon" as this type of movie.
I saw this movie when it was released in the theatres back in 1986.
It was an amazing thriller that kept you guessing then, and although I've seen it several times as well as all the Lektor movies in the series, it still is a great movie to watch again now.
Over the years, I couldn't watch William Petersen in an episode of CSI without always thinking of his portrayal of Will Graham in this movie.
Definitely worth the ride!
Good Movie! Better Than Remake 'Red Dragon'
Good book (Red Dragon) and well made movie. I think this movie set off the whole profiler craze in crime thrillers. William Petersen stars as Will Graham, the guy who put Hannibel Lecktor in the Asylum. Brian Cox plays a good Lecktor even though the role is smaller in this film. Michael Mann creates a slick, chilling atmosphere the remake never really captured. Definately worth the price.
Wrong
Who ever says this is a low budget, horrible make of the Anthony Hopkins movies has a mental issue. This is top rate good movie making. And has a lot of start up actors in it. Idiots!!! If your on that side. Beautiful movie with good acting and good script. Hollywood should not have re-done it, but oh well! Great sound track to, typical Michael Mann. So enjoy it for what it is! The first of some great movies in the "Lector" movies
