Plot Summary

Two lost souls make an unexpected connection in MAP OF THE SOUNDS TOKYO, a sexy thriller from writer-director Isabel Coixel (ELEGY). Ryu (Rinko Kikuchi, Academy Award nominess for BABEL) is a fish-market employee by day, contract killer by night. David (Sergi Lopez, PAN'S LABYRINTH) is a Spaniard who runs a Tokyo wine shop. David's girlfriend has recently committed suicide, and her businessman father, blaming David, hires a hitman to kill him. The assassin turns out to be Ryu, and she falls for the man she has been sent to eliminate, leading to a series of steamy sexual encounters in a hotel. Will David learn of his new lover's secret intent? Will Ryu be able to get out of her deadly contract? The sounds of the Tokyo night hold the answers.

Customer Reviews

Surprisingly good!

I debated picking up this movie for a while. I mean, even though the trailer looked pretty decent, there wasn't a single review. I largely ended up downloading it because of Rinko Kikuchi, who I'd seen in Babel and Sideways, and I wasn't disappointed. Both Kikuchi and Lopez do a wonderful job perfectly portraying the messed up relationship that their two characters have. That being said, the real star of the show is Tokyo itself and the beautiful cinematography that brings it to life. I've been to Japan a number of times and I can safely say that the director did a spectacular job of portraying the city's character. This is gorgeous movie throughout.

As far as the story goes, its thoroughly interesting without going too far over the top. There are times when the plot seems a little thin, but the movie always manages to keep us focused on how the main characters are feeling and progressing. I also really liked how the movie is narrated by a character who is both the close friend and the outside at the same time.

Overall, I would recommend this film. It loses a bit of the steam that it starts out with, but it remains enjoyable throughout. Depressing? Yes. Lots of sex? Yes. Worthwhile? As long as you're not expecting a happy story that's going to make you feel good about life, then without a doubt.
