Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Margaret comes apart at the seams as you watch it, but it gives off a lovely light. Seek it out. You can thank me later. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Jan 13, 2012

Fresh: For all its awkwardness and uncertainty, the film is a city symphony, romantic yet scathing, lyrical with street life and vaulting skylines, reckless with first adventure... – Richard Brody, New Yorker, Oct 10, 2011

Fresh: Ambitious, affecting, unwieldy and haunting, it's an eccentric, densely atmospheric, morally hyper-aware masterpiece... – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post, Apr 27, 2012

Rotten: Margaret is a mess. An impressive mess, but a mess nonetheless. – Tom Long, Detroit News, Oct 7, 2011

Powerful

Kenneth Lonergan is gifted, compassionate and kind, with an ear for human dialogue. The film is messy but as messy as everyday life. The performances are real - the moment when Matthew Broderick is dumbfounded by one of his student"s responses to King Lear captures the confusing nature of human perception. For some reason that I can only intuit, this scene captures the essence of the film: human confusion. It"s simply awesome!

maybe the depth surpasses me...

the excellent reviews led me on - unfortunately, I found the movie had various lengths and a certain lack of focus. I understand the point in depicting a young woman unravel in the adult world, but I would have expected something more from the director - some sort of culmination that never happens.

Definitely worth the rent

Wow.. Just got finished watching this movie and all I can say is that it's amazing. Don't go in expecting a 5 star movie but it's so different like it feels more like real life than other movies. I really connected with the emotional issues concerning the family life. Definitely a favorite movie now. Loved it!
