Plot Summary

Ernest Borgnine plays the title character, a lonely middle-aged butcher from the Bronx living at home with his well-meaning but smothering mother. When his mother convinces him to go out dancing at the Stardust Ballroom, he meets a rather plain teacher, Clara, who is also middle-aged and unmarried. After a few dances, they hit it off, but when she meets his mother and his slacker friends, they are nasty and hostile, and Marty doesn't return her phone call. But finally, at a bar with his friends, realizes he needs to live for himself, and rekindles the romance.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A warm and winning film, full of the sort of candid comment on plain, drab people that seldom reaches the screen. – Bosley Crowther, New York Times, Feb 21, 2014

Fresh: Ernest Borgnine as Marty lives up to all the promise he showed as the sadist in From Here to Eternity, and at the same time brilliantly shatters the type-cast he molded for himself in that picture. – TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It's a warm, human, sometimes sentimental and an enjoyable experience. – Ronald Holloway, Variety, Feb 23, 2012

Fresh: Paddy Chayevsky's script, adapted from his own TV play, shows his flair for dialogue at its best, and the film manages to be touching, if minor. – Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

4 Oscars

A wonderful little movie. Not for nothing did it win 4 Oscars: Best Actor, Best Director, Best Screenplay, & Best Picture.

A gem

This movie won Best Picture. It is a gem. Sorry, but no exploions or car chases. Just real people and a real good story.

RIP Mr. Borgnine.

In what is considered the most outstanding performances in his career. "Marty" delivers the heart tugging story of a lonely butcher who like everybody in this world hopes to find someone to settle down with. And for you younger people He was also the voice of Mermaid Man on Spongebob Squarepants. Or to people of my generation he was the older guy in the series Airwolf. But this movie shows his depth as an actor. To me there will always be a deep connection as my own father resembled him while I was growing up and people told him so. Thank you for your talent and charisma to the big and small screens. Give this one a chance. I feel it's worth a rental.
