Plot Summary

In 19th century Japan, an American journalist (Billy Drago of THE HILLS HAVE EYES) searches for the prostitute he'd loved and left behind years earlier. But on an island where demons and whores rule the night, a deformed courtesan awaits with a tale of extreme cruelty and perverse vengeance. What follows is an unspeakable orgy of torment and depravity, where the lusts of the damned will inflict wounds that remain forever. Youki Kudoh of Mystery Train and Memoirs of a Geisha co-stars in this justifiably controversial mindblower directed by Takashi Miike (AUDITION, ICHI THE KILLER), based on the Japanese horror novel Bokee Kyotee, and adapted by Audition screenwriter Daisuke Tengan.

Sure to leave an imprint.

Very disturbing and graphic movie. Certainly not for the feint of heart. This movie has a kind of ghost story quality to it, mixed with at times, nightmarish imagery that makes you want to cover you eyes.

Amazing. Disturbing.

Out of all of the Takashi Miike movies I have seen, I think this may be the best one. The imagery is vivid and surreal and at the end you're left questioning just what was real and what was fantasy. Imprint has a nice gothic and supernatural feel to it, fitting in with the rest of the series quite well, although it's unquestionably an Asian horror film. Although not everything in the movie works perfectly, it manages to tell an interesting story which is horrific and disturbing, if not necessarily scary, and it does so without ever really coming across as cheesy or low budget like so many other horror films.

As a previous poster mentioned, Imprint is extremely graphic and disturbing. It's one of the few films I've seen where I actually felt uncomfortable watching certain scenes. If you have a weak stomach, skip this movie because you won't enjoy it. If, however, you enjoyed other Miike movies like Audition or Ichi the Killer, you will probably want to see this one too.

Only Miike. Bravo.

I was told this masters of horror was the only one banned from the cable series. This is a must see. I am a very desensitized horror fan, and I was cringing through the middle half of this movie. I can completely see why this wasn't allowed on cable with the others. Miike doesn't mess around or play by anyone else's rules. He is THE master of horror and a film genius. Even the movies he creates that I despise have qualities that I appreciate in an honest director.
This is the only movie I have ever purchased from Itunes.
Hats off to Miike and BRAVO on this one.
