Plot Summary

In one of the most anticipated movies of 1994, boxoffice superstar Mel Gibson ("Lethal Weapon," et. al.) and two-time Academy Award-winner Jodie Foster ("The Accused," "Silence of the Lambs") are a dapper gambler and a seductive con woman in this slick Western based on the classic TV series. James Garner ("Murphy"s Romance," TV's "Rockford Files") -- the original Maverick -- James Coburn ("The Magnificent Seven," "Young Guns II"), Graham Greene ("Northern Exposure") and a slew of country singers co-star in this film by Richard Donner ("Superman," "Lethal Weapon" trilogy). The New York Times calls this "fast, funny, full of action...[it's] "Lethal Weapon" meets "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." The Hollywood Reporter calls it "a fast-shuffling escapade of antic wit...a delightfully appealing, brainy comedy...[a] royal flush" and Variety says it's "exuberant...a whole new generation is about to discover the charm, wit and fun of Maverick."

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Maverick exploits and undermines every western cliche from gunfights to war-whooping Indians to runaway stagecoaches and heroes hanging off cliffs. – Caryn James, New York Times, Sep 2, 2014

Fresh: True deft wit is just plum missing from this good-natured, flat-footed, eager-to- please, tee-hee Western. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Sep 2, 2014

Fresh: [Gibson and Garner] can make you smile contentedly even when the script is wandering and they're just sort of standing around waiting for its next good part to develop. – Richard Schickel, TIME Magazine, Sep 2, 2014

Rotten: Maverick is smart-alecky without being very smart. It's full of spoofy, har-dee-har-har ribaldries -- this film practically winks at you. – Peter Rainer, Los Angeles Times, Sep 2, 2014

Excellent!!!

This is a fun movie from the very start. I bought it when it first came out and still to this day love the whole thing. It's worth a rent to watch but to buy to watch over and over again. A+++

Classic, Playful and Hilarious! A must have!

This movie should go down as one of the most fun-filled, playful comedies featuring some of the most classic western character actors ever played. The "Maverick" character in the TV show made his living trying to swindle everyone else with his poker antics...now here everyone else is trying to swindle him! And he gets them back! This is non-stop hilarity at it's best, the cameos from days past will keep you on your toes, and the interplay between Gibson, Garner and Foster are priceless. This is one movie that takes top billing in my library whenever I need a quick "attitude adjustment." This is a movie you will never tire from...Thank you Burt!...er....BRET Maverick!

Hilarious awesome poker movie!!

Mel Gibson is at his best here, folks. The movie's waaay funnier and more clever than it lets on. James Garner, Jodie Foster, and Alfred Molina are all awesome in the mindblowing ride of a movie.
