Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: There are certainly some questionable ingredients to the story, but you're not likely to notice them while the film is under way. You're likely to be laughing. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Oct 26, 2011

Fresh: A consistently happy comedic fable which should please romanticists drawn to a teaming of Neil Simon, Marsha Mason and Herbert Ross. – Variety Staff, Variety, Oct 26, 2011

Rotten: Simon's gift also is his downfall. He's so good at writing lightweight dialogue that it all begins to sound the same. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Oct 26, 2011

Fresh: Ross directs competently and the cast could not be bettered. – Film4, Oct 26, 2011

Max Dugan is a Simon Classic

A wonderful cast makes this Neil Simon film set in Venice, CA in the early 1980's, an absolute go-to feel-good film. It has charm a la Robards, humor from Broderick, and Donald Sutheralnd plays a cop who has fallen for a frazzled and goofy Teacher at her wits end. The story is silly and kind of on the same vein as The Incredible Shrinking Woman in terms of tone, but it also has Simon's trademark lilt-with a hint of Brighton Beach Memoirs in the mix. I have always loved this movie for its entertainment value without being in your face as many 21st century films are. It does not take its self so seriously which makes it a pure joy to watch.
