Plot Summary
Mark Wahlberg delivers an explosive performance in this action-packed thriller based on the legendary, hard-hitting video game. Max Payne (Wahlberg) is a maverick cop with little regard for rules and nothing left to lose. Hell-bent on revenge, he's determined to track down those responsible for the brutal murder of his family, but his obsessive investigation takes him on a nightmarish journey where dark fantasy collides with stark reality. As the mystery deepens, Max is forced to battle enemies beyond the natural world...and face an unthinkable betrayal that will drive him to the edge of his own sanity.

Rotten: Max just drags on as it drags you down. If you stay and watch the endless end credits, there's a short scene that hints a sequel is coming. That's what I call real pain.
Rotten: The moviegoers are passive hostages on a long ride they've taken so many times before. So gameboys are advised to man their PlayStations this weekend; action-movie fans in search of red meat can wait for the inevitably more graphic DVD version.
Rotten: You can't help but wonder where the fine actor in The Departed and even Invincible has gone. It's not been a good year for Wahlberg: First The Happening, and now this.
Rotten: The filmmakers aim their cynicism more at us than at any government or drug company.

Payneful waste of time and money...
This film was so bad that I have resorted to actually writing my first review ever. How do some people in Hollywood have careers after this? The story is incoherent to the point that it doesn't even keep track of itself. There are chracters introduced and the audience is just supposed to know what they are all about. It's like they sat around the pre-production meeting and had a democratic vote against character or plot development. I have never seen a film with characters that literally serve no purpose. They dissapear and randomly reappear in the story in weird places...almost like there are parts of the film missing. I like Beau Bridges's work but this was his worst performance by far. His overacting was on par with japanese kabuki theatre. As for the rest of the cast they just drew a paycheck. This movie is so bad that it's not even worth watching to satisfy your curiosity on just how bad it is. I wouldn't watch it again if my life depended on it.
Max Payne - Made No Sense, Sucked
Max Payne, in the long line of horrible films based on video games (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Hitman), is certainly not the worst. But just like all the others, which also all showed a lot of promise, Max Payne is jumbled and impenetrable. I think that Max is a glorified secretary, but I’m not really sure about the purpose of his office, called Cold Case. All he does is get old cases that haven’t been solved, read them, and file them away. Mark Wahlberg (The Departed) tries to find depth and truth in his role of the strange, supehuman-esque (he took a shotgun shell to the shoulder...and survived), as does Mila Kunis (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), as an assassin hoping to avenge her sisters (new Bond girl Olga Kurlyenko) death. They both get lost in conspiracy theory-rich plot, involving an evil pharmaceutical company and a crooked ex-cop (Beau Bridges, My Name Is Earl). The ending of the film is so predictable and pathetic it’s not even worth ruining. The best and worst thing about it are the special effects. They’re very cool, as they were in The Matrix. Besides ripping off The Matrix, the plot steals from The Dark Knight, Blade Runner...just about every vigilante/chase movie...ever. If you really want to see a good shoot ’em up with special effects, then see Wanted with James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie.
Puts the game to shame....
This had to be one of the worst movies based on a video game. The game had an awesome story and great characters. The movie had terrible acting and and horrific plot...if they were trying to follow the original plot and characters they were as successful as a blind man trying to drive a car. Shame on Hollywood for producing this crap.
