Plot Summary
"It wouldn't be entirely fair to say that (Barry) Jenkins, a 29-year-old director whose immersion in movie history is both ardent and understated, is making a black version of a Joe Swanberg or Andrew Bujalski film, or even, to stretch the comparisons a bit further back, a mash-up of BEFORE SUNRISE and SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT. But it wouldn't be entirely inaccurate, either, because the tricky questions that govern MEDICINE FOR MELANCHOLY are how, why and to what extent race should matter in relationships between black men and women." –Scott, NY TIMES. "Jenkins's dialogue is crisp and witty, sounding and flowing the way real people speak. But it's also shrewdly nuanced" –Hardy, VILLAGE VOICE. "The actors are effortlessly engaging" –Ebert, Sun-Times. From IFC Films.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: It is an exciting debut, and a film that, without exaggeration or false modesty, finds interest and feeling in the world just as it is.
Fresh: A tasty slice of life, but one sliced thin enough to leave one feeling a tad undernourished.
Fresh: Medicine for Melancholy reminds that much is possible with little.
Rotten: Cenac is witty and Heggins has a wary stillness, but the movie itself seems too shy to let them really engage each other.

Brutally Underrated Work of Genius!
This is pre-Daily Show Wyatt Cenac at his peak, as a man stuggling between his race and the culture he lives in. This movie simultaneously and effortlessly examines a wide range of topics and is one of those independent films with a surrealy timeless spin on it. If you have any doubts about this movie I beg you to buy it and put those doubts to rest.
Amazing Character driven movie, love letter to San Fran.
This might be THE Black indie film, it's amazing and so realistic. Dialogue carries this movie and the cinematography is great, somebody a movie some of us can truly relate to.
Medicine for Melancholy
This is a quiet, unsentimental movie that takes its time. Beautifully shot and artfully muted in tone, you can feel the characters thinking and feeling in the silences that punctuate the clusters of dialogue. It is thought-provoking and socially conscious (race, class, gender) without being polemical: a breath of fresh air. You don't have to know San Francisco to like this film, but if you do, so much the better. Leads are perfectly cast.
