Plot Summary

MIDNIGHT SON is the story of Jacob, a young man confined to a life of isolation, due to a rare skin disorder that prevents him from being exposed to sunlight. His world opens up when he meets Mary, a local bartender, and falls in love. Tragically, Jacob’s actions become increasingly bizarre as he struggles to cope with the effects of his worsening condition. Forced by the disease to drink human blood for sustenance, he must control his increasingly violent tendencies as local law enforcement narrow their focus on him as a suspect in a series of grisly murders.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Horror films driven by ideas are thin on the ground, but behind the gory facade of Scott Leberecht's debut feature there ticks some cleverly assembled clockwork. – Robbie Collin, Daily Telegraph, Jan 11, 2013

Fresh: Yet another tortured-emo vampire movie, but there's an attempt to inject a dose of plausible realism into proceedings, rather than Twilight's leaden coffee-table stylings. – Andrew Pulver, Guardian, Jan 10, 2013

Fresh: A bloody and well-acted vampire curio. – Kim Newman, Empire Magazine, Jan 7, 2013

Fresh: gives the tropes of the undead a moodily modern revamp. – Anton Bitel, Little White Lies, Sep 6, 2011

Great and unique!

I'm glad I checked this one out. Very well done. The acting and the somber vibe- so well executed. This is no Hollywood glammed out vampire movie. Just the way I like em! Highly recommended!!!

Hidden treasure

A film so far removed from contemporary cinematic vampires that you'll wonder why we put up with the Belledwards of this world. It's not quite a fairy tale, yet not quite real in the sense of tedious pseudo-scientific reductionism. Solid performances from compelling actors, flawless effects, and an impressive (if not problem-free) script are three of the strongest of many strong points. Not in the same league as Let the Right One In, but worth every penny of your impulse rental. Arthouse horror fans: Go ahead and buy it.

Moody, unexpected and thoroughly enjoyable.

Every once in a while I discover a film which has somehow managed to fly well below most people's radar, and yet surprises me with its intelligence and craft. Some of the treasures I found are films like Devil's Backbone, Primer, TimeCrimes and the original Let The Right One In.

When I first watched Midnight Son I was taken aback from the quality of the story and acting…so much so in fact that I absolutely had to get involved in it somehow. Lucky for me, director Scott Leberecht had not yet settled on a music composer for the film and I happily accepted the job. Now, I know what you're thinking -- I worked on it so my opinion is highly biased. While I admit I am probably not the most objective reviewer, I am first and foremost a huge fan of this film. It's a movie that I will always be able to enjoy watching no matter how many times I've seen it.

Consider giving it a shot, I promise that you'll be pleasantly surprised!

(ok…small plug, if you do like the soundtrack, it is also available right here on iTunes)
