Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Based on the 1938 novel by Winifred Watson, Miss Pettigrew is a veritable treat. Wisely cast, this handsome production is a delightful farcical fairy tale, bolstered by moments of depth and emotion.
Rotten: At least Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day has the good grace to go wrong quickly; you don't have to sit there squirming with doubt.
Fresh: You can't criticize a souffle for not being a side of beef.
Fresh: [Ciaran Hinds is] a terrific character actor, and he actually gets to play somewhat of a romantic lead in the story with Frances McDormand, which I thought was so sweet and gave this film just a little bit of gravity.

Perfectly executed on every level
Most folks don't know this movie is adapted from a British novel by Winifred Watson first published in 1938. Well, this movie perfectly captures the spirit of romantic comedy in 1938? These kinds of movies warm my heart. This one in particular is smart, quick witted, endearing, innocent, heartwarming, entertaining, nostalgic, oh-so-British (sort of), and has fabulous art direction, musical score, and costumes. Who else could play the role performed by Amy Adams. She is brilliant: she can sing, act, and feign innocence better than any other actress--yet you still love her because her honesty shines through. And she's so lovely. And the three, no, make that four men, who star in this movie are terrific--each one perfectly exemplifying the kind of men the director meant them to be. By the way, I adore Ciaran Hinds....he's great in everything he does and carries with him such a strong persona...and so too is Mark Strong...very handsome yet with a strong comedic talent there--another great male actor to watch!!! And Lee Pace was adorable as the pianist who was truly in love with Amy Adams' character Delysia Lafosse (what a name, huh?). And Frances McDormand, there is no one better! You can tell Frances is a smart woman because she's so good at capturing characters and is so quick! Frances McDormand embodies the honest and hard working down-on-her-luck governess desperate for a job thrown into a world of high drama, big egos, and dishonest lovers. And in the end, after being true to herself, Frances McDormand (Miss Pettigrew) saves the day by . . . well . . . I won't give it away . . . but the end is very satisfactory indeed. Highly recommend this movie!
Now, that is how a movie is SUPPOSED to make you feel!
I left the theater with my friends in a decidedly… well…delightful, uplifted, optimistic mood. What a wonderful light-hearted comedy. Every actor played there part displaying too craft. The costuming was exquisite. The direction, cinematography, and editing perfection. I cannot think of one thing I do not like about this movie, other than it took too long to get to dvd so I could buy it.
I usually rent, but...
While I know a lot of people hate the renting feature, I actually enjoy the option of renting movies on iTunes. But this film is definitely worth the purchase price! I saw this movie in the theater and fell in love with it. So when I saw it was available on iTunes for a much cheaper price than on DVD I decided to purchase it. The film has a bit of an irritation factor that you have to get used to at first, but once you do it is very appealing. McDormand is absolutely wonderful, and is the best reason to watch it. Amy Adams is playing the exact same type of role as in "Enchanted," so if you found her as annoyingly shrill in that movie as I did, she will be your biggest hurdle in enjoying this film. But even her character grows and becomes likable as the story progresses. "Miss Pettigrew" is very entertaining and I very much recommend it.
