Plot Summary

Henry Fonda, James Cagney, William Powell and Academy Award winner Jack Lemmon steer a ramshackle Navy cargo ship into the wartime comedy hall of fame. An all-time classic. Henry Fonda is restless to see actual combat during World War II, but is stuck on a cargo ship with a crew of practical jokers who torment James Cagney, their slightly crazy captain. Cagney, of course, decides to get even. Superb ensemble acting, including Jack Lemmon's Oscar-winning performance as Ensign Pulver, make this movie a much beloved classic. From Academy Award-winning director John Ford ("Stagecoach," "The Grapes of Wrath") and Mervyn LeRoy ("Little Caesar," "Gypsy"), featuring a stellar cast of screen legends: Fonda, Cagney, Lemmon and William Powell ("The Thin Man"), in his final film. Adapted by Joshua Logan ("Camelot," "Picnic") from his hit Broadway play.

Mr. Roberts

I was a preteen when I first watched this movie. It has stuck with me over the years, including my own time in the Navy.
This is a true classic of dreams and aspirations, obedience, valor, and comradery. It's a drama about an officer aboard a supply ship in WWII, and a Captain with an illusionary golden crown.
It is also the first film to make me laugh months and years after having watched it. Jack Lemmon was perfect for the comic relief. I still have dreams filled with foam.
It isn't an award winner, and isn't meant to teach any moral. It's just a slow film about the slow life aboard a tight ship. Done perfectly by the immaculate artists; Cagney, Fonda, and Lemmon.

Funny and Harsh

Funny, touching, and horribly sad tale of a Naval supply ship officer who gets whats he want’s, to be in war instead of suppling it. Fonda acting is a little stiff, but still pulls off the role of Mr. Roberts, a supply officer who sacrifices his dignity for his crew and is repaid by their support. Cagney plays the perfect nemesis, Powell the wise medical officer and Lemmon the foolish ensign who, in the end, is inspired by Mr. Roberts.
