Plot Summary
After splitting the first six games, the Yankees and Giants squared off in Game 7 in Candlestick Park. Game 7 starter Ralph Terry, who had given up the deciding blast to Bill Mazeroski in the 1960 World Series, limited the Giants to just two hits going into the ninth inning. After pinch-hitter Matty Alou led off the inning with a bunt base hit, Willie Mays, who had just completed an outstanding 49 home run, 141 RBI season, ripped a double to right field. Roger Maris made a sprinting grab and managed to reach cutoff man Bobby Richardson to hold Alou at third. Terry's inside fastball on the second pitch to Willie McCovey handcuffed him. With millions of fans on the edge of their seats, McCovey's soft liner entered second baseman Bobby Richardson's glove to end the series.
