Plot Summary
In a seesaw series that saw the Yankees and Cardinals split the first six games, series MVP Bob Gibson helped St. Louis capture the pennant and the World Series for the first time since 1946. Overcoming three Yankees home runs, Game 7 starter Gibson capped off a grueling complete game victory by inducing a Bobby Richardson pop out with Roger Maris as the tying run in the on deck circle. Winning two of his three decisions, Gibson set a World Series record for strikeouts with 31 in 27 innings. Gibson served notice to the baseball world that over the next decade there would be no tougher, more intimidating big game pitcher in the game.
