Plot Summary

The Oakland Athletics, in search of the franchise’s first championship since 1930, outlasted Cincinnati’s “Big Red Machine” in a seven game series that featured six contests decided by only one run. The stylish Athletics, in their mod green and gold uniforms, battled their way to a championship against the ever hustling Pete Rose and the blue collar no-nonsense approach of Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, and Tony Pérez. Oakland rode a roster full of colorful names and personalities including Blue Moon Odom, Catfish Hunter, Vida Blue, Rollie Fingers, and Reggie Jackson to the American League flag. After the Athletics jumped out to a 3-1 series lead, the Reds battled back to square the count at three games apiece. The Athletics captured the seventh and deciding game 3-2 as the go-ahead run was driven in by a most unlikely World Series, series MVP Gene Tenace.
