Plot Summary

The feisty Oakland Athletics, overcoming internal turmoil, became the first team since the 1962 Yankees to capture back-to-back World Series crowns. In coming back from a 3-2 series deficit against the surprising New York Mets, the Oakland championship conquest was made possible by much of the same cast that captured the previous World Series. The one key addition to the Athletics roster was a healthy Reggie Jackson, who was poised to capture World Series MVP glory this time around. Boasting a trio of 20 game winners - Vida Blue, Ken Holtzman, and Catfish Hunter - and the relief provided by the leading fireman, Rollie Fingers, the well rested Athletics staff displayed no weaknesses entering the series. In contrast, the Mets staff of starters, Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman and Jon Matlack, with Tug “You Gotta Believe” McGraw in relief, was forced to scratch and claw their way into the postseason. But in his first taste of October baseball, Reggie was the driving force in returning the World Series crown to the Bay Area.
