Plot Summary

Modern Times, Charlie Chaplin’s last outing as the Little Tramp, puts the iconic character to work as a giddily inept factory employee who becomes smitten with a gorgeous gamine (Paulette Goddard). With its barrage of unforgettable gags and sly commentary on class struggle during the Great Depression, Modern Times—though made almost a decade into the talkie era and containing moments of sound (even song!)—is a timeless showcase of Chaplin’s untouchable genius as a director of silent comedy.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Do you have to be reminded that Chaplin is a master of pantomime? Time has not changed his genius. – Frank S. Nugent, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: It is a gay, impudent and sentimental pantomimic comedy in which even the anachronisms are often as becoming as Charlie Chaplin's cane. – TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The picture is grand fun and sound entertainment, though silent. It's the old Chaplin at his best, looking at his best -- young, pathetic and a very funny guy. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: The picture is a two-hour almost continuous gale of laughter with sidesplitting gags generously distributed throughout the five major sequences and the several minor ones. – Hollywood Reporter, Jun 24, 2010

A masterpiece

Chaplin' s brilliance pervades the enter film. Also, we can hear his first version of "Smile" which is a poignant touch to the love story .
Paulette Godard is radiant. However, Chaplin was a true renaissance man and we must hope that future generations will continue to reference and extol his works.

A classic!

Charles Chaplin was and will be the genius artist

The unsung stories

What u meant classic, it was only before World War Two, if u would consider these are classic who can tell & want 2 teach all the kids bout ancient philosophy, bout literature of the world, u might want 2 forget everything but u still have 2 remember one simple principle, without the wisdoms of our past there wouldn't be any future ok, u get 2 say Mr. Charlie Chaplan was and has been the pioneer of movie theatre, who else can provide 2 the audience all the black & white comedies like these but even the youth can still euthanize his ideas.
