Plot Summary
Award-winning Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov illuminates the life and legend of Genghis Khan in his stunning historical epic, Mongol. Based on leading scholarly accounts, Mongol delves into the dramatic and harrowing early years of the ruler who was born as Temudgin in 1162. As it follows Temudgin from his perilous childhood to the battle that sealed his destiny, the film paints a multidimensional portrait of the future conqueror, revealing him not as the evil brute of hoary stereotype, but as an inspiring, fearless and visionary leader. Mongol shows us the making of an extraordinary man, and the foundation on which so much of his greatness rested: his relationship with his wife, Borte, his lifelong love and most trusted advisor.

Fresh: There are plenty of haunting landscapes... along with the sort of warfare scenes that define epics, but also an unexpected take on one of history's most fearsome leaders.
Fresh: Bodrov and Arif Aliyev wrote the film, which was one of this year's foreign-language Oscar nominees, and their account is framed as a drama of inflamed loins and intense loyalty.
Fresh: The result is a wallow in old movie pleasures, full of battles, flying dust, thousands of men on horseback, beautiful women, treachery, slaughter, really cool hats and even more slaughter.
Fresh: A ferocious film, blood-soaked, pausing occasionally for passionate romance and more frequently for torture. As a visual spectacle, it is all but overwhelming, putting to shame some of the recent historical epics from Hollywood.

Mongol... not your average movie
Mongol was an amazing movie, with stunning cinemetography. Subtitles were easy to follow. There were gaps in plot, but not huge ones, besides, directors/producers of movie were following as accurately as possible what is currently known of Genghis kahn. For those interested in history, and not just action and violence... this is an extremly interesting movie. do not rate movies poorly because of subtitles.
U'zmeer kino
This film was well made, historically semi-accurate, and was tastefully produced. Having all dialogue in Mongolian attracts to the international audience as it allows for the most accurate portrayal of Chingis Khan's early life and conquest. I doubt very much that one can depict the traditional Mongolian lifestyle in English phonetics. On that note, the film captures the truely multinational nature of the Khan's life and his predecors'. The producer and film company are Russian and several of the actors are Mongol-speaking Japanese. Loves it!
why so few mongolian actors?
the hardest part of watching this movie was the fact that the two male leads aren't mongolian, and i couldn't get past their accents. i was happy to see that the actress who played borte is mongolian, but i'm saddened that the producer and director couldn't find a mongolian man to at least portray chingiss. he is the national hero here in mongolia, and it's just wrong somehow to see him acted by a japanese man.
