Plot Summary
Inspired by a true story. After a long absence abroad, a young Asian American woman Raffi Tang (Françoise Yip) is called home when her estranged mother is mysteriously murdered. Raffi becomes increasingly distraught as she struggles with her mother's loss and gets drawn into a web of deception and incompetence. Equal parts noir thriller and dysfunctional family drama, Doris Yeung's bold debut feature is a sobering tale of the pursuit of the American dream.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Plays like an artsy short stretched to 93 minutes.
Fresh: Motherland doesn't fully succeed on any of its levels. But Doris Yeung's subtle and intelligent debut feature contains enough interesting elements to mark the filmmaker as someone to watch.
Rotten: Despite its ambitious combination of murder mystery and cautionary immigration tale, Motherland doesn't quite hold together, lacking both the fuel to reach a rolling, procedural boil and the intimacy to simmer with emotion.
