Plot Summary

This Tribeca Film Festival midnight film breakout is hailed as a new, frightening addition to found footage horror films. Young couple Scott (Jon Foster of RAMPART) and Penny (Sarah Jones of TV’s SONS OF ANARCHY) just moved to a remote cabin and their only neighbor for miles is a strange hermit who only comes out at night. Each evening he drags his strange, disturbing sculptures deep into the woods and Scott and Penny begin to suspect this man is actually the infamous reclusive artist known only as Mr. Jones. They believe they’ve stumbled across a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to document his bizarre existence, but when they delve too deeply, the couple is trapped in a labyrinth of terror and must fight to escape a realm of nightmares. Costars David Clennon (THE THING).

Rotten: A nature-meets-nightmare tale that unfortunately gets lost in its own thicket of tricks. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, May 1, 2014

Rotten: That it half succeeds, in spite of its cloying self-seriousness, means that it's at best a convincing copycat of a definitive expression of ego and influence in art. – Ed Gonzalez, Slant Magazine, Apr 27, 2014

Didn’t do it for me.

What started out as an interesting take in the found-footage genre quickly dissolved into the cliched tropes that have plagued the genre since The Blair Witch Project. Too much movement, too little detail, too much darkness, not enough horror, it is just a great concept that fails in its execution. The movie was atmospheric, and some of the visual elements were creepy, sure. But, ultimately, if your horror movie lacks the horror it is attempting to convey, you have failed, in my humble opinion. This is the epitome of a children’s horror movie, in that it belittles the audience and does not give them anything worth mulling over in the end. Avoid at all costs.

Complicated film, boring drawn out ending, despite ode to Led Zep IV, still not too tasty..

Most horror films (of which this is most certainly not) ramp up the action from the climax to the end. This one, however, becomes muddled in its own self importance and loses the viewer in the process once the climax occurs. Just not a fun movie. Actors are not too likeable, and there are no real "scares" at all. It's interesting during the first 45 minutes or so, when the possibilities are so many. But once the hat is tipped, it's just another snoozefest. Save your time.

Still not sure

This movie was bad. Just bad. I'm still not even sure if mr jones is bad?
