Plot Summary

One day in 1872, Susie Graham is making beds at her mother's Leaping Rock, Nevada, boarding house. The next day, she's a millionaire's wife. That millionaire is Major Augustus Parkington, a dashing financial buccaneer who sweeps Susie away to a 5th Avenue mansion and a life of privilege and power. Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon mark the fourth of their eight beloved film pairings with this grand chronicle (featuring sharp Oscar-nominated* performances from Garson and Agnes Moorehead) that begins with Susie as the 84-year-old family matriarch and flashes back to decades of passion, breakups, reconciliations, losses, laughs, schemes and sacrifices. Epic romance, epic adventure: Mrs. Parkington invites you to share her remarkable life.

Greer Garson and Walter Pigeon = One of the great on-screen couples!

This is one of my favorite movies of all time and for many reasons other than I'm a huge Greer Garson fan. Greer Garson gives one of her best performances as Susie Parkington (I'd say it rivals her Oscar-winning performance as Mrs. Minniver). Greer brings strength and depth to a role that could otherwise fall by the wayside. Greer captures the audiences love and adoration with her fiery spirit and breaks our hearts with her longing and mournful eyes. Walter Pigeon is superb in the role of Major Parkington, allowing us to respect and adore him, while also slapping our foreheads saying "You imbacilic scoundrel!" The chemistry between he and Greer Garson heats up the screen, they truly work well together and should be held in the same respect as many of the other great on-screen couples. I think this is an excellent choice if you're looking to discover the beauty, grace and talent of Greer Garson; and to see the wonderful chemistry that she and Walter Pigeon made famous.

great underrated movie!

while Greer Garson is in elderly makeup when we first see her at the age of 84, you see the spunk that has brought her to that point in her life. Through flashbacks we see her life as a small town simple boarding house girl to the very wealthy wife of Major Parkington, Walter Pidgeon. He is a self processed scoundrel, and boy is he! He Just didn't know how much gumption that the little girl he married had! He soon found out, and after many trials and hardships, their love endured right through his death. We see their family all grow and spoiled brats who think of nothing but what to buy next, or where to go next. In the end, as the beginning, Granny has the last say! GREAT JOB GREER!!!
