One of the best "complex character" studies
Muriel is very complex and difficult to like (at least in the first half of the movie). She comes off as a dolt who will do anything to fit in with the town's popular clique, even swindle her crooked small-time politician father and lovable but broken mother. No wonder she's a little kooky, having been born into dysfunction, and growing up around the most deadbeat siblings ever assembled on film. But by the end, she does come to the self-realization that true friends (she has one) and even her broken family mean more than social and marital status. Stick with this movie (if you haven't seen it many times before) - and see if you don't watch it again (and again) to catch all the nuances in the story. An all-time favorite and so glad it's on iTunes now.
What a great movie!
I wish I could remember the number of times I've seen this movie; one of my favorites. Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths are great! I wish iTunes would make the soundtrack available, which I have but, unfortunately, I've lost one or two songs. The movie is funny and uplifting.
