Plot Summary

First you're hot, then you're not...and then you're Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant). So when the sizzlingest tween-queen on the charts asks the has-been '80s pop sensation to write her a song, he grabs for another chance at stardom. Problem: Alex can say it with music, but he sure can't say it with words. Enter Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore, his beguiling if quirky plant lady, who has a green thumb for lyrics. Together, they go after songwriting success -- and discover that if you want to write the perfect love song, it helps to fall in love. With Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore at the keyboard and Marc Lawrence (Two Weeks Notice) directing, Music and Lyrics is a witty, wacky romantic comedy that faces the music...and laughs!

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Light, sweet and agreeably confident – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Grant strikes precisely the right note with regard to Alex's career: He's too intelligent not to be a little embarrassed, but he's far too brazen to feel anything like shame. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Feb 17, 2007

Fresh: Grant is as smarmily sarcastic as ever, but Barrymore constantly pulls him back. Despite her record number of bad role choices, she may be the warmest comedy actress around, and you can't help rooting for her. – Jack Mathews, New York Daily News, Apr 12, 2007

Rotten: Too bad director Lawrence tends to hit you over the head with the jokes in his script. – Lou Lumenick, New York Post, Jul 16, 2008
