Plot Summary

Alan's quest for success in music and love is hampered by one thing-- himself. Centering on Alan's half-hearted romancing of radio DJ Sara and promoting his fledgling band, MUTUAL APPRECIATION is less a love story than an insightful and hilarious portrayal of the art of awkwardness. He slinks through New York City bars, clubs and teeny apartments in this exploration of the gray areas between expectation, disappointment and desire that accompany adulthood. An indie festival favorite, MUTUAL APPRECIATION is a cleverly written, utterly timeless snapshot of post-college angst. Andrew Bujalski was voted "Someone to Watch" at the 2004 Independent Spirit Awards and writer-director of critically acclaimed Funny Ha Ha.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: You can't exactly call it progress, but it is thrilling (in a low-key sort of way) to see real young adults looking and acting the way they do, light years away from the toothy flesh-bots that have supplanted them on screen. – Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times, Sep 20, 2007

Fresh: There is no denying the director-screenwriter's ability to capture a certain real-life quality on film. – Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The film's mood and style are pitched somewhere between '60s American indie and French New Wave and, as you watch these people, they seem painfully, amusingly on-target. – Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Bujalski's writing is so good, and every shot and edit seems exactly right. – G. Allen Johnson, San Francisco Chronicle, Nov 12, 2009
