Plot Summary
MY AFTERNOONS WITH MARGUERITTE is the story of life's random encounters. In a small French town Germain (Gérard Depardieu, Cyrano de Bergerac), a nearly illiterate man in his 50's who is considered the village idiot, takes a walk to the park and happens to sit beside Margueritte (Gisèle Casadesus, The Hedgehog), a little old lady who is reading excerpts from her novel aloud. She's articulate, highly intelligent and frail. Germain is lured in by Margueritte's passion for life and the magic of literature from which he has always felt excluded. As Margueritte broadens his mind by reading excerpts from her novel, Germain realizes that he is more of an intellectual than he has ever allowed himself to be. Afternoons spent reading aloud on their favorite bench transform their lives and start them both on a new journey to literacy and respect for Germain, and to the deepest friendship for Margueritte.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: It rarely rises above the pedestrian.
Fresh: A heaping pile of cliches doesn't prevent this touchingly simplistic tale from exuding a strong and universal emotional appeal.
Fresh: This little gem is all about the nature of chance encounters and how they can change us in unexpected ways.
Fresh: An appealing coming-of-middle-age comedy, My Afternoons With Margueritte exhibits a pleasantly light touch even when dealing with some fairly weighty issues.

Delightful Depardieu
I miss the smaller scale, more intimate films Depardieu did so well years ago. This is a gem of those types of independents that focus and storytelling and not formula. Depardieu plays a 50-something "local" who was tortured throughout his life by his mother and classmates because he didn't seems to be what he should. To his mother, he was a mistake. In school, he was the slow kid everyone picked on, students and teachers alike. He grows up in a loveless environment but nonetheless finds a life for himself as a handyman among other tidbits. Film revolves around his accidental friendship with an elderly woman he meets in the park who soon begins reading books aloud. Depardieu's character slowly discovers another side of himself as the story progresses, and this changing man deals differently with those in his life. A very lovely, uplifting story. So glad he still finds time to make the little films that will survive the test of time
What a wonderful film
Simple and easy to watch. Yet mostly skirting the cliches it could have easily been filled with. Leaves you thinking about the things that connect us all and how we find and value them.
