Plot Summary
"I always know where I am by the way the road looks..." Keanu Reeves ("The Matrix" trilogy, "The Day the Earth Stood Still") and Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominee River Phoenix ("Running on Empty," "Stand by Me") star in Academy Award-nominated director Gus Van Sant's ("Milk," "Good Will Hunting") seminal meditation on the nature of innocence as two young men living on the fringes of society peddle their bodies for sex. Amiable, none-too-bright street hustler Mike Waters works the streets of the Pacific Northwest with his best friend Scott Favor. Mike secretly loves Scott, and Scott, the son of Portland's wealthy mayor, secretly yearns to cast off the friendship of his fellow lowlifes and assume his birthright of wealth, power and respectability. Based on William Shakespeare's play, "Henry IV, Part I."

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The performances, especially by the two young stars, are as surprising as they are sure.
Fresh: My Own Private Idaho lacks the dramatic punchiness of Drugstore Cowboy, yet it's a rich, audacious experience.
Fresh: An essential testament to the beauty and chops of the late River Phoenix...
Rotten: [Van Sant] disdain[s] narrative. He got away with Drugstore Cowboy because its band of drugged-out dodoes were engaged in a petty crime spree that almost passed for a plot. But My Own Private Idaho is a different story. Or rather nonstory.

Wow
One of Van Sant's crowning achievements and of course River. Imagine if he would of lived... Nonetheless, I fell in love with Van Sant's craft and in love with River Phoenix.
Amazing!!!
This movie is so.. I cannot find the words to describe this sad, suspenseful, funny and drama filled movie. I love the realness and raw feeling you get between Mike and Scott. Mike is in love with Scott and I found that the scene when they are around the fire really captures them. What they feel towards each other. This movie took me on an emotional roller coaster. I love it! Bravo!!
Not worthy of a sale?
Coincidentally enough, I was considering purchasing this movie just yesterday. I notice Apple Inc. "mentions" LGBT on their storefront. Is there a reason these films are not on sale during Pride, making them more accessible to people? Thanks...
