Plot Summary

France, a single mother from the blighted industrial north, and Steve, a hotshot trader with a keen eye for the killer deal, are thrown together when he’s looking for a cleaner and she’s looking for a job. When Alban, Steve’s 3-year-old son, arrives on the doorstep to stay with his dad, Steve might need more than a cleaner. And France might need some payback from the man who almost single-handedly shut down the factory where she worked..

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Paints an alluring picture of a pan-European cosmopolitan culture whose characters hopscotch from one country to another with hardly a second thought in a lighthearted floating party. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Dec 8, 2011

Fresh: Though the setup sounds cliche, the storytelling is polished enough to keep auds hooked and occasionally surprised. – Boyd van Hoeij, Variety, Dec 8, 2011

Rotten: A feeble stab at topicality from that master of overripe Gallic melodrama, Cedric Klapisch. – Nick Schager, Village Voice, Dec 6, 2011

Rotten: True, the movie sidesteps a couple of cliches it seems headed directly toward, but I might have preferred them to the preposterous melodrama it substitutes. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Feb 2, 2012

Sleeper

This movie has surprises galore. For example, about three quarters of the way through the movie, the plot looked like the two main characters were going to have a love affair beyond a one night stand. And bang! in a few seconds the entire plot theme changes and becomes unique rather than mundane. I believe that the reason that it has been overlooked is because the English is in subtitles. Karin Viard really convinced me of the roles she played. In addition, I totally disagree with the review by Roger Ebert that there is preposterous melodrama substituted for cliche plot lines. If one lived in one of the towns whose businesses were decimated by short trading on the stock exchange, one would understand the emotions expressed in the movie as being right in line with real life. Since Chicago, Ebert's base did not experience the loss of businesses that other areas did, it is understandable that he would be out of touch.

Drama, definitely not a comedy

This is definitely a drama and I am not sure why this is classified as "comedy". There are only a handle of funny scenes and overall the atmosphere of the movie is relatively heavy, i.e. sick woman rising her kids by herself in the blue-collar town of "Le Havre" with a background of employees' strikes and factory closure....The movie starts slow, gets the plot set up and then builds gradually to finish with a relatively strong and gripping ending. The fiction is a bit "cliche" at times and takes some easy shortcuts, especially in the way it depicts the finance world but it works overall and it serves well the purpose of the storyboard. 3 stars and a rent recommendation.
