Plot Summary
The Texas State Armadillos are fourth down and nowhere-to-go after a corruption scandal nearly ends the football program. Now upstanding coach Ed Gennero (Hector Elizondo) must put together a brand-new team. For the position of quarterback, Gennero recruits Paul Blake (Scott Bakula, Quantum Leap), a 34-year-old former high school star whose field of dreams turned out to be the family farm. Blake still has the arm, but can he score with a team that includes a samurai lineman, a butterfingered receiver, and a Samoan strongman with eyes for the placekicker (Kathy Ireland)? Rotten: If the movie were a farcical free-for-all ridiculing the hyper-competitive world of college football, it might be amusing. But it can never decide whether to be an athletic answer to National Lampoon's Animal House or icky-inspirational like Rocky.
Rotten: Avoid it because it's the sort of soporific cliche-fest in which every player gets exactly one measly trait, and the suspense about who's going to win the big game registers at absolute zero.
Rotten: This gridiron comedy piles up cliches the way Notre Dame racks up yardage, with an option-variety screenplay that promiscuously pitches the story in multiple directions.
Rotten: The shameless commercialism and hypocrisy of big-time college football is a target as inviting as a receiver wide open in the end zone. But the muddled huddle that is Necessary Roughness is one long fumble strewn with offensive lines.

This movie is comic genius. Oh so many quotables! My brothers and I still quote the movie and the laughs never get old. Bunch of great and familiar faces, too.
