Plot Summary

In 1964, a mob of klansmen murdered three civil rights workers in the small Mississippi county of Neshoba - the infamous "Mississippi Burning" murders. The young men, two Jews from New York and an African-American from Mississippi, were in the Deep South helping to register African-American voters during what became known as Freedom Summer. Although the killers bragged about what they did, it took the state 40 years to indict the mastermind, Edgar Ray Killen, an 80-year-old preacher and notorious racist. NESHOBA tells the story of three American heroes and the long struggle to bring their killers to justice in a place that is still dealing with the legacy of a violent and racist past.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: This film is a document of hope, progress and idealism but also a reminder that the deep springs of bigotry and violence that fed a long, vicious campaign of domestic terrorism have not dried up. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Aug 13, 2010

Fresh: Neshoba is a troubling documentary, a film about fiery passions and murderous deeds that is disturbing in ways that go beyond what might be expected. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Sep 10, 2010

Fresh: Though Neshoba is standard-issue in terms of craftsmanship, the tools used to tell the tale (newsreels, family photos, crime scene and autopsy photos) are masterfully employed. – Ernest Hardy, Village Voice, Aug 10, 2010

Fresh: Though the film gets carried away by its black-and-white-together-we-shall-overcome vibe, the raw facts are undeniably where the real emotion lies. – Lauren Wissot, Slant Magazine, Aug 18, 2010
