Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: [Feels] like an acting exercise in search of a theater class ... – Neil Genzlinger, New York Times, Nov 29, 2012

Fresh: While New Jerusalem's rigid formalism will surely be off-putting to some, there's beauty to be found in the film's sheen of placid grime. – Sherilyn Connelly, Village Voice, Nov 27, 2012

Rotten: The movie is undeniably sincere, but it's oblique to the point of being opaque. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Dec 6, 2012

Rotten: Unlike the soul-searching characters from Old Joy, which also stars Will Oldham, Ike and Sean always feel as if they've fallen out of the sky just for the film's setup. – Kalvin Henely, Slant Magazine, Nov 29, 2012

beautiful and quiet

this is one of the most honest and even-handed portrayals i've seen of religion in america, and i loved the silence, space and tenderness that develop between the two main characters. so important in a time when we are polarized by so many issues, our faith included. i wish more films challenged us to slow down and contend with the reasons/ways we/others believe (or don't) as this one does.
