Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: [Feels] like an acting exercise in search of a theater class ...
Fresh: While New Jerusalem's rigid formalism will surely be off-putting to some, there's beauty to be found in the film's sheen of placid grime.
Rotten: The movie is undeniably sincere, but it's oblique to the point of being opaque.
Rotten: Unlike the soul-searching characters from Old Joy, which also stars Will Oldham, Ike and Sean always feel as if they've fallen out of the sky just for the film's setup.

beautiful and quiet
this is one of the most honest and even-handed portrayals i've seen of religion in america, and i loved the silence, space and tenderness that develop between the two main characters. so important in a time when we are polarized by so many issues, our faith included. i wish more films challenged us to slow down and contend with the reasons/ways we/others believe (or don't) as this one does.
