Plot Summary

Philadelphia, 1976. After years of mysterious absence, Marcus returns to the neighborhood where he came of age in the midst of the Black Power movement. While his arrival raises suspicion among his family and former neighbors, he finds acceptance from his old friend Patricia and her daughter. But Marcus quickly finds himself at odds with the organization he once embraced, whose members suspect he orchestrated the slaying of their former comrade-in-arms. In a startling sequence of events, Marcus must protect a secret that could shatter everyone’s beliefs, as he rediscovers his forbidden passion for Patricia.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Night Catches Us, a politically sophisticated and ethically serious film, makes no big speeches or obvious points. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Dec 3, 2010

Fresh: Night Catches Us, Tanya Hamilton's first feature as a director, is something to cherish. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Dec 2, 2010

Rotten: Acting, particularly by Anthony Mackie and Kerry Washington, is first-rate, but the story is as ramshackle as a South Philly tenement, with an equal number of structural violations. – John Anderson, Variety, Nov 30, 2010

Fresh: The film is compelling as it dramatizes the confusing and contradictory impulses in the black community during that time. – James Greenberg, Hollywood Reporter, Nov 30, 2010

people, stop writing ignorant reviews

stop writing dumb reviews complaining about the price of rental! it's on itunes over a MONTH before the theatrical release---I for one applaud this innovation. you can still go see it in theaters if that's your thing.

BUT if you don't like the "theater experience" (I don't) or you want to save money, it's a great option! And sure, maybe the cost of a movie ticket is less than $10 where you live (it's 12-16 dollars in Los Angeles for new movies), but if you factor in gas and optional snacks, etc, it may not be---plus, watch it with a friend! That's two tickets right there and certainly worth $10.

In conclusion, stop complaining about crap.

PS. It's a great movie, and Anthony Mackie and Kerry Washington are two of the finest actors out there right now.

Night Catches Us

Really great film. Super cast. Very well made. And it's great to get to see a small personal drama about black history/culture/people. You never see films like this. Plus, it's totally cool to get a chance to rent/see a big buzz film before it's even released.

Night

Great Film. Waiting for more like it. Itunes bring on some more this is what your made for.
